More students registered at Dutch universities, 19% international

The total number of registered students at Dutch Universities rises with 5% according to VSNU (Association of Dutch Universities) based on provisional registration figures for the academic year 2018-2019. There are nearly 290.000 students studying at a Dutch research universities. The percentage of international students also increases. 19% of the registered students is international.

The chairman of VSNU, Pieter Duisenberg is positive about this growth. Considering the tightness on the labour market we need highly skilled professionals, both in specific fields such as education, health care and engineering, as well as for the Dutch knowledge economy in general. However the rising numbers of students results in a significant amount of pressure on universities. He therefore urges the government to invest in higher education to maintain the quality of scientific education.
The final registration figures will be available early 2019.
